Multi-Use Paths: User Expectations vs. Behaviour

Organization:
Intact Public Entities
Location:
Virtual Event, Ontario, Canada
Start Date:
June 18, 2024
End Date:

Description
This session will explore the complexities of constructing multi-use paths. Multi-use pathways are physically separated from motor vehicle traffic and may be within the road allowance or outside of the road allowance or a combination thereof. Multi-use paths may be used by any nonmotorized user, including people walking, cycling, skateboarding, kick scootering, in-line skating, and other active transportation modes.  Patrick Connor from Ontario Trails Council joins IPE’s Road Specialist, Brian Anderson, to provide insights and:

  • Discuss the user's expectations.
  • Examine the municipality's obligations under the Occupiers' Liability Act.
  • Assess the necessity for a level of service policy.
  • Determine key factors for establishing a reasonable timeframe to address defects.
  • Highlight the importance and content of documentation.
