The Transportation Planning Section is responsible for planning the long term road, bicycle and pedestrian needs for the City, managing the preparation of the annual transportation capital program and the 10 year capital program, reviewing road design projects, liaison with Transit and Provincial Road Authorities, planning for and evaluating the transportation requirements for all new development in the City, and managing the City's traffic calming program.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team of 7 engineering and planning professionals. The work will involve a variety of tasks related to the traffic calming program, including responding to public inquiries, problem identification, option evaluation and report preparation, and some field studies. Additional duties will be varied, but could include conducting traffic counts, collecting engineering inventory data, assisting with the planning and implementation of bike network and pedestrian enhancements, assisting with land development reviews, assisting with the implementation of new pay parking areas, and assisting with the promotion of walking and cycling at schools.
The level of responsibility will depend upon the candidate’s aptitude and initiative. The successful candidate must be a team player, who possesses the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications; collect and analyze data.
Applicants must have completed their first year of a diploma or degree program in a related discipline. A valid Class 5 BC driver's license and a safe driving record are required. Applicants with a Class 7 BC driver’s license would be required to use their own vehicle for business purposes and purchase necessary business insurance. The City of Surrey reimburses 53 cents per kilometer for use of a personal vehicle.
