A canopy of light to create a magical atmosphere under the stars

Amiens

Imagine looking up to find a canopy of lights suspended above strings of lights crisscrossing in playful zigzags, a sparkling tent of light, or a vibrant, animated vault of color. Few elements transform a space into a true destination as effectively as overhead lighting installations and light canopies.

For cities, municipalities, Business Improvement Associations, tourism regions and shopping centers, they represent a high-impact investment, delivering immediate visual appeal, driving evening foot traffic and fostering a stronger sense of community pride.

Light can transform any space

Light canopies can be adapted to a wide variety of environments:

Commercial streets and pedestrian areas - Installed in zigzag patterns or straight rows, strings of lights transform a street into an illuminated corridor that encourages people to stroll and linger in the area after dark. In Europe, many cities have adopted this approach in narrow streets shared by pedestrians and vehicles, achieving results that are both functional and spectacular.

Public squares and markets - Christmas markets, summer markets, festivals: a light canopy helps define the space and instantly creates a festive, recognizable atmosphere.

Forest trails and outdoor pathways - Illuminated trails in natural settings are among the most popular types of projects. Installing overhead lighting along a forest path creates a unique immersive experience, particularly striking in winter.

Skating loops and ice trails - Ice and light are a natural pairing. Suspended above skating rinks and frozen trails, string lights enhance the atmosphere and extend the experience well beyond sunset.

Patios, courtyards and walkways - One of the most accessible ways to transform a secondary space into a destination.

Temporary or permanent?

Temporary - Ideal for a one-time event, a season or a pilot project. It offers great flexibility in terms of layout, and the equipment can be reused.

Permanent - Recommended for commercial streets and public spaces looking to create a distinctive year-round atmosphere. Permanent installations offer greater long-term value by reducing recurring installation and removal costs. With the right products and a solid infrastructure, the same installation can be reinvented from season to season.

Products: from classic to immersive

Festoon string lights - A go-to solution for permanent outdoor installations. Their round, warm bulbs create a festive and timeless atmosphere, whether arranged in zigzags or straight rows above a street, patio or marketplace. Durable and designed to withstand all four Canadian seasons.

Mini LED string lights (Maxi-Brillante) - Perfectly suited to temporary light canopies, these strings deliver exceptional light density. Their tiny points of light create a mesmerizing starry-sky effect, while their lightweight design ensures quick, effortless installation and removal, making them a top choice for prestigious events and festive markets.

Light curtains - static or twinkling effect - Complete immersion in light. Installed as continuous layers or stacked at different heights, light curtains create a dense, enveloping canopy of illumination. The twinkling variation adds a magical dimension, particularly striking for winter events and signature spaces.

Animated RGB string lights - Designed for installations that can evolve with the occasion, these fully programmable string lights create spectacular displays: from warm white to winter blue, festive red to multicolor animations, or even a complete sound-and-light show.

Configurations : it's all about the effect

  • Zigzag - Dynamic and full of movement, ideal for streets and commercial areas.
  • Parallel rows - A structured, generous effect suited to both small and large spaces.
  • Canopy or dome - String lights radiate outward from a central point, creating an immersive dome of light. A spectacular option for public squares, tented events and spaces with a central layout.
  • Light vault - Multiple layers of friezes stacked at different heights to create a fully immersive and enveloping effect.

Benefits

  • Immediate visual impact and strong potential for social media sharing
  • Increased evening and off-season traffic
  • Versatility: a single infrastructure can create multiple atmospheres throughout the year
  • A stronger identity and greater appeal for the location

Considerations to plan for

  • Anchoring and infrastructure - A preliminary technical assessment is essential to validate attachment points and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Weather conditions - Permanent installations must be certified for four-season outdoor use.
  • Power supply - Planning the electrical network and cable management is an integral part of the design process.
  • Permits and approvals - Road-use permits or municipal approvals may be required depending on the type of space.

Completed projects and sources of inspiration

Dolbeau-Mistassini, Quebec - A great example of a project that reinvents itself from summer to winter. The Voûte Étoilée (Starry Vault) installation gives the same space a completely different atmosphere depending on the season, demonstrating how an investment in lighting infrastructure can deliver year-round value while creating lasting benefits for the community.

Île Saint-Quentin ice trail, Mauricie - A perfect combination of light and winter landscape. String lights suspended above the frozen trail create an immersive experience that transforms a simple outdoor activity into a true event, one that is also highly shareable on social media.

Europe and North America shared streets and urban corridors - In many European cities, and increasingly across North America, overhead lighting installations have become true urban signatures. In lively public spaces, light creates a strong visual landmark that turns an ordinary journey into an experience, naturally inviting people to look up, slow down, and stay a little longer.
