Hamilton’s first ‘GreenGym’ showcased at Woodlands Park Makeover

Hamilton, July 2, 2009 -   It’s highly accessible. It supports a healthy and active lifestyle. And best of all – it’s free! It’s Hamilton’s first GreenGym - an outdoor gym which provides an opportunity for parents, siblings, grandparents and nannies to get some exercise while their children are playing in a park nearby.

Representatives from Siemens, the Barton Village BIA and AAT School joined Public Works staff and City officials to showcase Hamilton’s first GreenGym fitness equipment which was installed in Woodlands Park at the corner of Wentworth and Barton Streets as part of an Extreme Park Makeover project. Siemens donated $18,000 towards the installation of this new fitness equipment which does not use weights for resistance, but rather one’s own body weight. The devices are inviting, and look more like friendly playgrounds than intimidating fitness equipment. More information about GreenGym can be found at www.greengym.ca.

“Siemens has supported Woodlands Park for the last few years with new trees, shrubs, benches, and community clean ups,” said Brian Maragno, Plant Operations Manager from Siemens’ Hamilton plant.“We were proud to continue our support with the GreenGym. Now the park provides an innovative way to keep fit and is open to all.”

With sponsorship and volunteer support from Siemens working with volunteers from AAT School and the Barton Village BIA, this month long park makeover also included improvements to shrub beds, trees planting, applying mulch, graffiti removal, installation of benches, and repairing the fence and baseball field. Through this unique partnership, the park has been renewed for the enjoyment of area residents.
“This is truly a great day for the residents of the Woodlands Park neighbourhood and the City of Hamilton,” said Ward 3 Councillor Bernie Morelli.“The generous financial support from Siemens and the hard work by all the volunteers, community organizations and local businesses in revitalizing this park is greatly appreciated.I would especially like to commend the dedicated area residents who have assisted in maintaining the park throughout the past several years.I will continue to work strongly with residents in this and other neighbourhoods in the hopes of building more GreenGyms. It is truly an event to celebrate the continued, on-going development of the Barton Street corridor.”

The Extreme Park Makeover is an initiative of Hamilton’s Public Works Department that partners community groups with Public Works staff to rejuvenate neighbourhood parks. For more information on the Extreme Park Makeover other volunteer beautification programs, please visit www.hamilton.ca/publicworks or call 905 546-CITY (2489).
