Hamilton receives award recognizing leadership in greening its fleet
Hamilton, May 26, 2009 -
On May 21, at the fourth annual Green Fleet Expo, the City of Hamilton received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Fleet Challenge Ontario recognizing its leadership in greening its fleet.The award was presented to Chris Hill, Manager of Central Fleet with the City of Hamilton.
“Hamilton is regarded as a green fleet leader in Canada for boldly creating one of the first ever green fleet plans which created a model for many other municipalities,” said Roger Smith of Fleet Challenge Ontario. “Hamilton has also demonstrated tremendous leadership by conceiving and launching the annual Green Fleet Expo in partnership with the City of Toronto to support and promote the adoption of green fleet technologies in other cities.”
Fleet Challenge Ontario is a not-for-profit program of the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance that helps fleet operators reduce their fuel consumption, operating costs and tailpipe emissions through sharing of modern fleet management techniques and proven best management practices.
“I am extremely pleased to receive this award,” said Chris Hill.“We take our environmental responsibility very seriously and we hope that we can inspire other municipalities to transition their fleets to greener alternatives as well.”
The Green Fleet Expo, which was attended by over 250 participants from across Canada, took place at the Royal Botanical Gardens.It was organized by Cities of Hamilton and Toronto to provide fleet managers across Canada with an opportunity to learn about new and emerging green technology to adopt in their own municipalities. The focus of this year’s event was electric vehicle technology.

Since the initial Green Fleet Implementation Plan (phase one) was approved by Council in 2005, Hamilton has been recognized as a leader in the use of advanced vehicle technology that reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.It has the second-largest fleet of hybrid and other clean and efficient vehicles in Ontario and actively participates in studying and promoting new technology.
Hamilton’s hybrid fleet has grown to 135 vehicles and has helped to convince vehicle manufacturers that the hybrid market is worth pursuing aggressively.The Central Fleet has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 546 metric tonnes over the three-year timeframe of phase one, which is equivalent to reducing the fleet by 45 vehicles.
Hamilton is currently implementing phase two of the Green Fleet Plan which will focus on:
- Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to meet the targets in the City’s Strategic Plan;
- Reducing fuel use and improving litres/100 km results; and
- Maintaining Hamilton’s place as a leading Green Fleet.
