End Date:

Description

In your daily work, you might encounter ethical issues or situations that require you to look beyond the technical requirements of your job and toward the moral dimensions. But ethical issues can be perplexing...

How should you think through them?

What questions should you ask?

What factors must be considered?

Who can you turn to for guidance? and ultimately, what is the right thing to do?

In this workshop we discuss; general ethics, ethical theory and how it relates to municipalities and their agencies.

We'll help you to understand what constitutes an ethical dilemma and to develop an increased awareness of ethical issues that are faced by municipal employees.

We use fictional scenarios that illustrate potential ethical situations that pertain to municipal situations. The purpose of these scenarios is not to provide you with solutions, but rather to familiarize you with some types of ethical dilemmas that might arise in your daily work. The session also provides instruction on how to assess the ethical climate of your municipality. As well, some suggestions on how to implement an effective ethics and whistleblower policy.

In this interactive and highly engaging workshop, participants will;

  • Learn how to balance personal and organisation ethics
  • Learn when to "blow the whistle"
  • Be able to identify unethical behaviours
  • Analyze why good people do bad things
  • Interpret ethical values that you are expected to honor when carrying out your duties
  • Identify considerations to keep in mind as you work toward your own resolutions of ethical dilemmas
  • Locate resources that might be useful to you in resolving ethical dilemmas
  • Identify the essential components of an ethics and whistleblower policy
