Description:
You will assume the role as the Chief Building Official for the City of Edmonton reporting to the Branch Manager of Current Planning. You will apply your extensive knowledge of building and construction while leading the Safety Codes Section to operational excellence. Key responsibilities include:
• Lead the safety codes section of approximately 50 staff that administers the Alberta Safety Codes Act for construction valued in excess of 2 billion annually
• Partner with the construction industry to enhance building practices within the City to achieve higher sustainability and construction quality standards
• Develop practices, tools, and procedures to enhance compliance of safety code inspections
• Contribute towards the development of a performance based culture supporting the achievement of tactical and strategic service delivery goals
• Develop a public awareness program regarding the role of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, the scope of safety codes inspections, and consumer interest issues
• Develop recommendations and lobby for legislative changes to safety codes and related legislation
• Participate on cross disciplinary teams to improve building development outcomes including building design functionality and performance objectives
• Facilitate the resolution of complex issues with engineers, architects, owners, and lawyers and oversee the preparation of issue reports for Council
• Prepare and forecast annual operating budgets

| Requirements |

Job Requirements:
• Bachelors' degree in Engineering or Architecture and a minimum of 7 years progressively responsible experience in building, construction and safety codes
• Safety Codes Council certification is an asset, but you must be willing to complete the certificate within 2 years
• Strong customer service focus with an ability to support positive relationships and achieve business goals
• Ability to engage and educate a wide audience including staff, builders, citizens, and politicians about current building and construction information/opportunities
• Current expert knowledge of building, construction, and safety codes to discuss complex technical and qualitative decisions
• Highly developed leadership and management skills, including strong coaching and mentoring abilities to support the development of numerous teams
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills to make and communicate sound decisions
• Knowledge and ability to mediate and negotiate frequently attaining focused results satisfying both customers and staff
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present to industry and Council, respond to a large volume of inquiries, and prepare reports
Note: A security clearance is a condition of employment. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Security Clearance letter from the Edmonton Police Department. Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance.
Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program.

Salary Range:
91M, Salary Grade: ML4, $98,900.00 - $141,285.00 (Annually).
