If so, this is your opportunity to be part of the Office of Biodiversity as an Ecological Planner and make a difference every day.
You will be responsible for delivering internal and community education, engagement and stewardship programs in support of achieving the City of Edmonton's biodiversity protection goals. You will also be responsible for biodiversity policy and strategic planning. Some of the key duties include:
• Develop and deliver community natural area/biodiversity stewardship programs
• Train and coordinate community volunteers in the stewardship of natural areas through programs such as the Master Naturalist Program
• Coordinate citizen monitoring and inventory work to increase the City's understanding of local biodiversity trends, threats and program effectiveness
• Apply advanced knowledge of ecological planning and urban conservation theory in plan development
• Organize community engagement events to invite input and to understand concerns and opportunities
• Develop and deliver programs that increase public understanding of the value of natural areas, ecological processes and naturalization
• Office of Biodiversity outreach, including presentations to community and internal groups about the City's conservation work
• Support other Office of Biodiversity priorities
• A Master's degree (preferred), a Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Education, Sociology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
• Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental / urban planning, policy development, community engagement, education and related areas. Candidates with less than four (4) years of experience may also be considered
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning and conservation planning, as well as applicable legislation and regulatory requirements in Alberta
• Experience working with grassroots organizations on conservation and stewardship initiatives and community engagement is highly desirable
• Experience working with community groups and/or volunteers would be considered an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication for a broad range of audiences, including strong presentation skills
• Good customer service, teamwork, organizational and project management skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Strong working knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Google and Social Media
• Membership/eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is desirable
Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program.
Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 032, $42.306 - $53.987 (Hourly); $74,532.60 - $95,111.60 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
