The Junior Project Surveyor works under the direction of Professional Land Surveyors at a sub-professional level in the Engineering Department and within in all areas of land survey service delivery provided by the Survey section. Following successful completion of the required probationary period, the Junior Project Surveyor enters into an article-ship with a mentor British Columbia Land Surveyor (BCLS) for a period mutually determined by the Association of British Columbia Land Surveyors (ABCLS). This mentorship will be for approximately 12-18 months and will depend on the candidates overall training and experience. The Junior Project Surveyor will receive training of increasing responsibility during the course of the article-ship which aims to prepare the candidate for successful certification as a British Columbia Land Surveyor within the ABCLS. Once certified, the Junior Project Surveyor will be able to apply for opportunities as a British Columbia Land Surveyor (BCLS).

This position involves but is not limited to complex surveying work, supervising staff in obtaining data and field measurements for office interpretative purposes, performing calculations on survey data, compiling detailed field notes and laying out features for construction of City utilities and other city projects.
 

Requirements

The ideal candidate possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills along with proven skills in the effective direction of survey staff. Extensive knowledge of all types of City survey work both theory and practise is required as well as a Certificate of completion from the Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors (CBEPS) and eligibility to article as a Land Surveyor-in-training. Thorough knowledge of survey computations and the ability to complete complex computations on the survey work performed in addition to experience working with modern survey instruments and the ability to prepare detailed field notes is essential.

Completion of Grade 12 is required supplemented by a University degree in Geomatics Engineering or alternatively, a Degree of Technology in Geomatics or a two-year Diploma in Geomatics from a recognized technical school. Completion of a supervisory skills course coupled with preferably 5 years demonstrated civil engineering and legal survey experience is desired. This position also requires a valid B.C. Driver’s license with a safe driving history.
