Position Type/ Hours: This is a permanent position working forty-two (42) hours per week.
Position Description: With some independent action, operate and maintain assigned equipment in landfill, recycling and composting operations primarily bulldozers, compactors, front end loaders and skid steers along with excavators compost turners and screeners rock trucks, roll-off trucks, water trucks, and other heavy equipment used in year round maintenance of solid waste facilities under municipal jurisdiction.
Under general supervision shall perform, monitor, and coordinate assigned work task and direct operations in such a manner as to ensure compliance with Federal, Provincial, and Municipal acts, regulations, and policies pertaining to solid waste and hazardous waste management.
Direct staff in performing assigned tasks on recycling facilities, landfill cells, drainage ditches, public roadways, compost facilities, retention ponds, screening area, and stockpile areas to ensure compliance with the applicable regulatory acts and regulations. Shall assume leadership role and provide partial cover-off of foreman duties for the solid waste facilities in the absence of the foreman, two hours per weekday and twelve (12) hours during weekend shifts.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Equipment operation training is required.
• Must have Landfill Certification from Alberta Environment.
• WHMIS/TDG/OFA is required.
• Supplementary training in landfill, recycling, collections, transfer stations, or compost are assets.
• Three (3) years combined experience in the operation of bulldozers, compactors front end loaders and skid steers is required.
• Experience with landfill operations equipment such as excavators, rock trucks, rubber tired and track loaders, roll-off trucks, water trucks, and compost turners and screeners is considered an asset.
• Minimum of two (2) years landfill experience is required.
• Supervisory experience is considered an asset.
• Valid Class three (3) Alberta driver's license with Q endorsement required (a clear driving record is an asset).
• Class one (1) Alberta driver’s license is an asset.
• Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Considerable knowledge of safety precautions, methods and techniques employed in operation of heavy equipment.
• Required to be proficient with infrastructure engineering drawings, contracts and plans relating to refuse collection, processing and/or diversion/disposal operations.
• Demonstrable knowledge of occupational hazards, waste symbols, signage, and safety precautions applicable to the work.
• Immunization is strongly recommended as the incumbent will be exposed to unsanitary conditions.
• Ability to perform duties as outlined on the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for the position, in all weather conditions.
