Under the general supervision of the Director of Policy, Communications & Economic Development, the incumbent assists in the provision of a full range of legal services for the City of Yellowknife. The incumbent provides opinions along with verbal and written advice to internal clients on an array of diverse legal matters; drafts, negotiates and reviews various contracts and other agreements to which the City is a party; drafts bylaws and policies for Council’s and Administration’s consideration; and may also act as a liaison between external counsel and Administration.
This position requires a Bachelor of Law degree or equivalent and eligibility to practice as a member of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories. The incumbent must have some experience in corporate planning and a strong knowledge of municipal governance, structure, issues, policies, practices and service delivery. This knowledge is usually gained from a minimum of three years of litigation (civil and regulatory and enforcement) and legal counsel experience (i.e. in corporate commercial, procurement, real property and construction law).
