The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Strategic / Social Planner to join our team of professionals in the Community Development Division, Long Range Planning Department.

Reporting to the Manager, Long Range Planning, the successful candidate will be responsible in this exempt position for advanced level professional planning work, playing a key role in setting the overall policy direction for the Township to achieve its social sustainability objectives, within a broader context of community planning and sustainable development. Major policy initiatives may include preparation of a Social Sustainability Strategy, and implementation of the Age-Friendly Strategy and Housing Action Plan.  You will assist in managing and identifying strategic projects (related to growth management, community and neighbourhood planning, rural/agricultural planning, and urban design) and prioritizing social issues (such as affordable housing; age-friendly planning; family, child and youth development; diversity and multiculturalism; access and inclusion; vulnerable and isolated populations; civic engagement; poverty; homelessness; public safety; substance abuse and food security) in a multidisciplinary framework; as well as manage the work of professional teams to organize, lead and facilitate community engagement events, with a focus on encouraging participation by the youth, the elderly and isolated populations.  It is necessary you have an exceptional ability to manage complex and sensitive projects; well-developed communication and presentation skills (oral and written); outstanding skills in building community capacity; thorough knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation; and the ability to be involved in community planning projects, tackle new challenges, conduct vigorous policy analyses and develop new strategies.

Your education includes a Masters’ Degree in Planning, or related discipline, with at least seven years of related work experience in a strategic planning and/or social planning position; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Additional credentials and professional experience in public engagement is desirable. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the current trends and approaches to advancing sustainability objectives as well as of the policies, bylaws, and legislation related to a broad range of strategic planning and social planning issues; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, professionals and the public; and the ability to manage the work of subordinates and direct the work of consultants engaged in social planning projects . Competency in relevant computer applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is necessary.
