ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER

(2 Positions:  1 – Perm. FT & 1 – Temp. FT up to April 28/17)

Environmental Services Department

 

Position Overview:  The Environmental Officer (EO) is responsible for providing environmental monitoring and enforcement services within the City of Barrie. The EO performs field monitoring activities for the City of Barrie including the collection of surface water, groundwater, wastewater and soil samples.  This includes performing field work at various industrial, commercial, and institutional properties.  The EO enforces the Sewer Use By-law, Site Alteration By-law and Waste By-law for City of Barrie residents and industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities through compliance inspections, investigations and sampling.  On a rotating basis, the EO participates in an on call roster and responds to spills that may cause adverse effects to the natural environment and human health

Key Qualifications:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Environmental Technology or related area;
  • Preferences for additional education include:  Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network – Participants Certificate; Traffic Control-Book 7; Hazmat training; Spill Response training; Boat Operators Card; Water Quality Sampling and Monitoring ;Environmental Law; Spill Awareness
  • A valid class “G” licence in good standing

 

Experience

  • At least one (1) year of related work experience.  Three (3) years of related work experience is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability                       

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check is required as a condition of employment
  • Strong skills in report writing, statistical analysis and laboratory and sampling techniques.
  • Strong computer skills using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and graphics applications
  • Thorough working knowledge of appropriate related legislation, practices and procedures including the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Excellent organizing, interpersonal, customer service, record-keeping, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and understand road infrastructure maps with respect to structural systems, plumbing systems, sewers, creeks, watershed boundaries, lot grading, etc.
  • Excellent record keeping skills in a regulatory enforcement capacity with the ability to submit evidence in court.
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the position including the climbing of stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain, wading in creeks.
  • An Environmental Officer is required to wear a respirator and, as such, must be clean shaven and medically fit to wear a respirator
  • Experience with GPS, field equipment such as YSI handheld meters, pH meters, ISCO automated samplers, groundwater sampling equipment etc., is preferred.
  • Experience with Laboratory and sampling techniques is preferred.
Salary & Benefits

The 2016 salary range is $58,640 to $70,252 per year ($32.22 to $38.60 per hour). The hours of work will be 35 hours/week.  Full details of these positions are available on our website at www.barrie.ca.
