Transportation is a key strategic priority for the City of Surrey. The Project Engineer is accountable to the Transportation Planning Section Manager for the preparation of transportation plans and studies, policy development and design reviews as part of the Policy and Strategic Planning Group. This role involves coordination across the Engineering Department, other City Departments and external agencies to plan and provide the necessary transportation infrastructure and services required for the continued growth in Surrey.

As an Engineer in Transportation Planning you identify with these key attributes and accountabilities:

  • You are a strategic thinker, who is able to support current and anticipate future transportation needs in line with the City’s overall goals and objectives.

  • You have expertise at developing and implementing policies at a strategic level and will manage and coordinate multi-modal transportation policy studies and plans.

  • You have strong relationship management skills to ensure the interests of Surrey are effectively advanced in your direct liaison with various external agencies such as TransLink, Metro Vancouver, the Province and other intergovernmental bodies.

  • You will develop, implement and evaluate new and existing short and long-term transportation planning programs, plans, policies, services, standards and specifications including updates to the Transportation Strategic Plan and formalization of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) initiatives.

  • You will provide training and guidance for the development of junior employees.

  • You have excellent written and spoken communication and customer service skills and will provide the public, senior management, internal stakeholders and Council with prompt and high quality advice, recommendations and information.

  • You have the organizational skills required to balance the management and delivery of multiple projects within ambitious timelines while at the same time being a key tactical resource for various duties in response to urgent and high profile issues.

  • Your decision making and problem solving abilities will be critical as you review and resolve issues concerning Transportation within a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline of engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Membership or eligible for membership with APEGBC as a Professional Engineer or possess a limited license.

  • Minimum 5 years of transportation experience, including experience in transportation planning

  • Considerable experience in transportation policy development and implementation

  • Working knowledge of relevant design standards associated with Transportation Engineering

  • A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with a safe driving record.
