BUILDING INSPECTOR – SMALL BUILDINGS &

BUILDING INSPECTOR – SMALL BUILDINGS (Temporary up to 6 months)

Building and By-law Department

The Building Inspector – Small Buildings position administers and enforces compliance with the Ontario Building Code and Municipal By-laws. Providing inspection services in order to protect the health and safety of our citizens and enhancing the quality of life for the community.

 

Requirements

Applicants must have:

Key Qualifications:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology or a related discipline.   A Four (4) year University Degree in Architecture or Engineering is preferred.
  • CBCO certification through the Ontario Building Officials Association, and the filing of required Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing qualifications in the following categories:


 

  1. General Legal/Process
  2. Small Buildings
  3. Plumbing – All Buildings
  4. Building Services
  5. Building Structural
  6. On-site Sewage Systems


 

  • Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing, and a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business throughout the City including subdivisions under construction where roads are not yet assumed by the City

 

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience (Five (5) years of experience is preferred) conducting inspections of buildings to confirm compliance with regulations
  • Large building construction experience is preferred; Construction supervisory or management experience is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Good working knowledge of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code and other building-related legislation/regulations/by-laws and related inspection processes; traditional and contemporary issues in the building industry; building design and construction principles; lot grading and drainage control principles; municipal government; the Occupational Health and Safety Act; and related construction regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret building plans with respect to architectural design, structural systems, plumbing systems, heating systems, fire safety systems and lot grading.
  • Must have excellent knowledge of building construction methods to evaluate the construction of structural, mechanical, fire safety provisions and lot grading practices
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Windows-based database software and the internet.  Experience with permit and inspection tracking software (such as AMANDA) is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational/coordinating, project/time management, research, analytical, communication, problem-solving/mediation, public relations, customer service and multi-tasking/work prioritization skills
Salary & Benefits

The 2016 salary range is $58,640.40 to $70,252 per year ($32.22 to $38.60/hr).  The hours of work will be 35 hours/week.  For full details regarding this position, please visit our website at www.barrie.ca.
