Building and By-law Services Department

Requirements

Applicants must have:                                                                                              

Key Qualifications:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) Year College diploma in Architectural Technology or Civil Engineering Technology.  A University Degree in Architecture or Engineering is preferred
  • CBCO certification through the Ontario Building Officials Association
  • Qualifications and registration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing by the passing of Ministry exams for


 

  • Legal Responsibilities for CBOs
  • Small Buildings
  • Plumbing – All Buildings
  • Building Services
  • Building Structural
  • On-site Sewage Systems


 

 

Experience

  • At least three years’ experience (six year experience is preferred)  in the conducting of plan reviews of buildings to confirm compliance with regulations.

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Good working knowledge of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code and other building-related legislation/ regulations/by-laws and related plan review processes; contemporary issues in the building industry; building design and construction principles; lot grading and drainage control principles; municipal government; the Occupational Health and Safety Act; and related construction regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to read building plans with respect to structural systems and lot grading.
  • Availability to accommodate deadlines, meeting attendance and/or peak period workloads that may extend beyond the normal workday or may occur on evenings/weekends, as may be required.
  • Ability to interact effectively and courteously with all contacts in a political and community/client service environment; to exercise discretion and judgment when handling confidential/sensitive/controversial information and assure the security of such information/files; to build co-operative/collaborating working relationships, and internal and external alliances; and to champion corporate programs/initiatives, mission and values of the City.
  • Computer literacy skills utilizing e-mail, word processing and Windows-based database software and the internet.  Experience with permit/tracking software (such as AMANDA) is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational/co-coordinating, project/time management, research, analytical, communication, problem-solving/mediation, public relations, customer service and multi-tasking/work prioritization skills.

 

Salary & Benefits

The 2015 salary range is $53,526 to $64,136 per year ($29.41/hr to $35.24/hr).  The hours of work will be 35 hours/week. For full details regarding this position, please visit our website at www.barrie.ca.
