Lethbridge County is a vibrant southern Alberta community, located only an hour from the Rocky Mountains and the U.S. border. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of internal and external communications, marketing, branding, public engagement and special event functions for Lethbridge County.  Key responsibilities will include the preparation, development, and organization of content for numerous communication materials including: public service announcements, media releases, fact sheets, backgrounders, community newsletters, annual reports, pamphlets, brochures, staff newsletters, website content, and advertisements.  Your clients range from internal departments including: employees and Chief Administrative Officer, to the public, Reeve and Council and external partners.  Public Relations skills will be utilized to ensure County citizens are aware of the services, projects and activities going on in the County.  You will effectively support the organization’s strategic plan as well as promote the goals, objectives and accomplishments of key initiatives undertaken throughout the County.

Requirements

Education/Training/Skills Required

  • Successful completion of a degree in communications, journalism, social sciences, public administration or related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.An equivalent combination of management approved training and experience may be considered.

  • Three (3) years’ of related experience in communications, public relations or marketing.

  • Strong computer skills, including effective working skills of MS Office and Adobe desktop publishing and web-authoring products such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Etc.

  • Experience in layout and design, both for print and on-line.

  • ICS training and emergency communication experience would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of the municipality, its services, programs and political protocols.

  • Demonstrated understanding of communications and public relations practices and principles; an ability to assess situations, determine strategies to meet communication objectives, and provide professional advice, recommendations and solutions based on those principles.

  • Superior communication skills and comfort in working with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, evaluation, proofreading and presentation skills and ability to adapt writing style to target audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with honesty, sensitivity and diplomacy. Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal tactfully in an open and political environment.

  • Ability to take initiative and meet deadlines while prioritizing several competing, complex and evolving projects.

  • Experience with event coordination and planning.

  • A valid class 5 driver’s license in good standing.

Working Conditions

Office environment.Due to the nature of this position, occasional overtime or evening functions will be required.

Travel to the Picture Butte and Lethbridge Airport location is periodically required.
