Position Summary
Administer and enforce the Ontario Building Code Act and regulations, zoning, related by-laws and all applicable laws;

Inspection of properties and the preparation of evidence for committees, tribunals and courts; Issuance of building permits, plan reviews and inspections of residential, institutional, commercial and industrial properties with regards to structure, plumbing, wiring, heating systems, sanitation, fire and safety;

Serve notice stating specific defects to owners or other appropriate parties when standards do not comply with the regulations and by-laws;

Review construction projects to confirm compliance to Ontario Heritage Act and approvals as well as Building Code Act;

Liaise with other departments on cultural heritage matters;

Maintain good public relations with all concerned parties;

Re-inspect properties to determine action taken and perform necessary follow-up;

Issue orders giving particulars of action to be taken and attend court when required;

Assure compliance to EPA in regards to requirement for Site Condition Investigations;

Respond to complaints concerning construction, zoning, related by-laws and applicable laws;

Serving customers at the counter;

Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

Qualifications, Competencies
Diploma in Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Building Code Technology;

Two or more years of experience in the enforcement of codes, standards and municipal approvals;

Consideration may be given to an equivalent of post-secondary education and training with at least 2 years of building inspection experience in a municipal setting;

Qualification as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or Certified Architectural Technologist (MAATO) and as a Certified Building Code Official (CBCO) is preferred; or the ability to achieve certification as an Engineering Technologist (CET) or a certified Architectural Technologist (MAATO) and CBCO;

Qualifications under Bill 124 to inspect Houses, HVAC Houses, Small Buildings including Plumbing, and preference will be given to those who have qualifications to inspect Large Buildings, Complex Buildings, Structural (all buildings) and Building Services;

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Ontario Heritage Act and best practices regarding built heritage conservation;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands
Possess a high degree of tact and a record of good public relations;

Strong written and verbal communication skills;

Ability to prepare and give evidence at Tribunals and in Court;

Ability to handle stressful situations on a regular basis;

Demonstrated knowledge of the construction industry and building codes and practices;

Sound understanding of related acts and legislation including health and safety practices;

Ability to work independently and as a team member;

Strong problem solving skills with good judgment;

Working knowledge of Word, Access, and Outlook software with the ability to perform data entry;

Must adhere to the prescribed Code of Conduct for Inspectors;

Ability to travel and maneuver within a variety of building & construction sites in the Municipality, while meeting the physical demands of this position, i.e. bending, climbing stairs, standing etc.;

Must possess and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license with the ability to provide own vehicle.

Salary & Benefits

$34.15 - $39.14 an Hour Plus Benefits

** PLEASE NOTE ** the above 2015 rate of pay includes a Temporary Market Adjustment increase
