Manager of Solid Waste Management

Responsible for: managing the collection and disposal of solid waste including the daily operation of the Waste Management Section of the Environmental Services Department through contracted services and assigned staff. Develops, prepares, and administers multi-year solid waste collection contracts; develops and manages budget; issues contract tenders; reviews contract proposals, and in conjunction with the Director, awards contracts. Through oversight of extensive contracted out services, provides exceptional customer service, ensuring residents’ requirements are met while ensuring departmental and Occupational Health and Safety regulations are met. Conceptualizes and prepares reports based on analysis of Solid Waste Management Programs, policies, procedures, trends, etc, and provides recommendations and solutions.
- Successfully completion of a 3 year College Diploma in Environmental Technology or suitable equivalent and possesses a Certified Engineering Technologist / Technician Designation.
- Minimum of five (5) year’s progressively more responsible municipal waste management experience including contract preparation and administration, and three (3) years supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Current, thorough knowledge of the Occupational Workplace Health and Safety Act and the Environment Protection Act.
- Possesses excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; with an ability to perform well under pressure with conflicting priorities.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills exercising tact and diplomacy in effectively interfacing with the public and staff.
- Proficient working knowledge of the City’s Waste Collection By-law. Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in the City’s core competencies.
- Proficient computer skills coupled with a solid working knowledge / application utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel, and Outlook; including use of electronic purchasing systems.
- A valid Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s license in good standing with a access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
