WATER SUPPLY AND TREATMENT OPERATOR CLASS IV

Temporary – 11 Months Approximately

Environmental Services Department

 

The Water Supply and Treatment Operator Class IV position assists the Water Supply and Treatment Lead Hand as a field leader to maintain and ensure the delivery of a continuous potable drinking water supply for the City of Barrie residents and citizens. This position acts as the Operator-in-Charge (OIC) and is responsible for the daily operational and maintenance activities of the Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) and the Ground Water Supply systems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the drinking water systems.  This is achieved through proper control parameters that are determined and set through the constant monitoring and maintenance of the drinking water systems.  Additionally, this position is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely completion of operational and maintenance activities within the field to maintain compliance with drinking water acts and regulations, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Branch, Department, and Corporate policies and procedures.

Requirements

Applicants must have (under review):                                                                   

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Two (2) year College Diploma, Environmental Engineering Technician, Electrical Engineering Technician, Civil Engineering Technician, Mechanical Engineering Technician or related discipline.  (Three (3) year College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology or related discipline is preferred)
  • Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Class IV Certificate in Water Treatment and/or Water Distribution and Supply
  • Gas Chlorination Training
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing

 

Experience

  • Five (5) years of demonstrated related experience as required to obtain Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Class IV Certificate in Water Treatment and/or Water Distribution and Supply, including experience in an operational/maintenance work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience as an Operator-in-Charge (OIC)

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Medical documentation to confirm medically fit to wear a respirator
  • Thorough working knowledge of all of the applicable legislation, including but not limited to the following, as it relates to a Class II Water Distribution subsystem, a Class IV Water Distribution and Supply subsystem, and/or Class IV Water Treatment subsystem:
  • Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002
  • O. Reg. 169/03, Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standards
  • O. Reg. 170/03, Drinking Water Systems
  • O. Reg. 128/04, Certification of Drinking Water System Operators and Water Quality Analysts
  • Drinking Water Works Permits
  • Municipal Drinking Water Licences
  • Procedure for Disinfection of Drinking Water in Ontario
  • Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standards
  • Ontario Water Resources Act
  • O. Reg. 225/14, Water Taking
    • Permit to Take Water
  • Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • American Water Works Association (AWWA) Standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS)
  • Demonstrated organizational, record keeping, communication (written and oral) skills
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Internet Explorer, SCADA,  IFIX, Maintenance Management Systems, and GIS/CAD software

 

Salary & Benefits
