RECREATION PROGRAMMER - INCLUSION

TEMPORARY – 1 Year Approximately

RECREATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT

 

 

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following (under review):

 

Staff Management

  • Provides guidance, support and supervision for year round casual, part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers involved in the operation of recreation programs.
  • Supervises and provides guidance and support for a wide variety of part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers involved in the operation of leisure and recreation programs; including crisis support and physical/behavior interventions
  • Duties include recruiting, training, orientations, in services, supervising and evaluating.  Responsible for i-work and submission of weekly payroll sheets for all staff.

 

Financial Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of Recreation Services annual budget; assists in managing the budget and controlling expenditures.
  • Responsible for financial accountability and viability of programs/courses
  • Develops partnerships with appropriate businesses and organizations to acquire funding for various projects.
  • Developing and evaluating performance measures to meet business and customer needs, including participation & utilization rates, financial targets, customer satisfaction.
  • Engages in grant writing and implements fundraising projects and correlating distribution of financial assistance for support service fees
  • Develop sustainable long range budgetary plans to increase accessibility while fulfilling fiscal responsibilities through innovative cost effective methods of delivering services and programs

 

Customer Service

  • Represents the City of Barrie while acting as a resource person for community groups, organizations and agencies; meets with and works closely and co-operatively.
  • Represents the City of Barrie while sitting on local and surrounding area committees related to providing services and supports for unique populations
  • Identifies, develops and organizes strategies, opportunities and reduction of barriers for members of special interest groups or unique populations to participate in community groups and programs.
  • Maintains effective and co-operative liaison, and exchanges information with other staff, other City departments, other municipal Recreation Departments, government agencies etc.
  • Develops partnerships with appropriate businesses, social services agencies and organizations to acquire funding for various projects.
  • Respond to crisis calls as it relates to participants with special needs, within all recreation program areas and provide assessment, staff support, specialized  resources and program evaluation and assistance
  • Provide clients with a multi systematic approach by developing specialized plans and programs with an interdisciplinary team consisting of both internal and external contributors.
  • Advocate by using best practices and knowledge of related legislation to ensure all members of the community have access to a safe and positive recreation experience
  • Facilitate networking between recreation, social service agencies, school boards and residents through recreation programming, events and partnerships

 


 

 

Administration

  • Ensures the recreation department is in compliance with legislation as it relates to disabilities and access including but not limited to Human Rights Commission and AODA
  • Develop and implement area specific staff development opportunities through training initiatives and program support
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and understanding of disabilities and related practices, ideologies and legislation
  • Assess the program needs of the residents of Barrie and make recommendations to the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Develop, implement, schedule, administer, promote and evaluate the programs, services and events provided for the community.
  • Assumes the duties and responsibilities for the operation of a Recreation facility in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor.
  • As a member of various community committees represents the City of Barrie while acting as a resource person for community groups, organizations and agencies; meets with and works closely and co-operatively with groups to identify program needs, determine programming directions etc.
  • Performs various administrative functions:  prepares, maintains and processes various records (e.g. time records, financial records, membership and attendance records) statistics, reports (including year-end reports), procedures manuals, etc; Purchases materials and supplies and ensures that adequate levels of materials and supplies are maintained and inventoried; receives, processes and tracks payments for programs and services
  • Supporting facility construction projects related to programs facilities through providing expertise (fitness, sport, etc..)
  • Responds to inquiries; provides information, explanations, assistance, etc.; handles and resolves problems and complaints; and deals with staff, programme participants and members of the public in a courteous and efficient manner to maintain a high standard of public relations at all times.  Conducts and maintains positive internal and external customer service to ensure total service excellence.
  • Prepares correspondence, notices, announcements, bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, guides, calendars, promotional material etc.

 

Requirements

Applicants must have:                                                                                              

 

Key Qualifications (under review):

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Two (2) year college diploma in recreation, disability studies or a related field.
  • Successful Police Record Check with vulnerable sector check
  • Standard first aid and CPR C
  • BMS/CPI Certified
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Experience

  • Specific program related certification as required; behavior management system, gerontology, High Five
  • Four years’ experience working in the field of recreation i.e. aquatics, fitness, camps, etc., two of which includes working with people/children with various disabilities requiring behavior management techniques, physical interventions and experience with the family unit as a whole

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Excellent staff leadership skills to provide leadership to staff and volunteers.
  • Computer literacy utilizing email, word processing, spreadsheet software (specifically the Microsoft Office Suite Outlook, Word, Excel.  Desktop publishing software to design and produce marketing and promotional m Police Record Check with vulnerable sector check
  • Working knowledge of legislation as it relates to the field of disabilities
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of various disabilities, behavior management techniques, physical interventions and family development/dynamics
Salary & Benefits
