SMALL BUSINESS CONSULTANT

(Temporary - 2 years approximately)

Greater Barrie Business Enterprise Centre (GBBEC)

Summary of Major Responsibilities include (under review):

Small Business Support

  • Responds to small business inquiries. Provides information, guidance, support and customer service to individuals and groups in the process of starting or operating a small businesses on a variety of topics including marketing, market research, financing and regulatory information.  Provides instruction and feedback on the preparation of business plans.
  • Works closely with clients from pre start-up though start-up and during the first 5 years of a new business to provide support and assistance.
  • Networks with community groups and delivers outreach programs throughout Barrie and the greater area.
  • Meets with industry experts including bank managers, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals to gain insight into challenges facing small business owners.  Bases consultation advice on best practices gained through formal education and previous business experience.
  • Supports the Manager of the Greater Barrie Business Enterprise Centre in the recruitment of experts, mentors and advisors, where required, and obtains and maintains the appropriate documentation and records associated with the mentor/expert program components

Seminars

  • Administers the GBBEC seminar series, including scheduling seminars and workshops; recruiting and coordinating guest speakers; finding and securing locations for off-site presentations; processing registrations; and preparing and delivering related marketing materials

 

Administration

  • Performs outreach activities for area groups, colleges, high schools, and trade shows.
  • Researches (Internet, magazines, newspapers, seminars, professional development), selects, and adds to GBBEC resources (e.g., articles, software).
  • Provides input, coordinates and supports the implementation of the Greater Barrie Business Enterprise marketing plan.  Networks with businesses and stakeholders in order to create awareness of the Centre and its programs, as well as to refer clients.
  • Provides input to the Small Business Centre’s annual business plan and monthly reporting, including data collection, analysis and consolidation.
  • Conducts annual customer surveys, as well as workshop and event evaluation surveys.
  • Assist in the delivery of government programs, including the Summer Company Program and Starter Company, providing guidance to youths in developing a business plan
  • Supports the City’s corporate and economic development initiatives.
  • Attends regional meetings, program training and other relevant sessions related to the delivery of small business support services and programs
Requirements

Key Qualifications (under review):

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • 3 or 4 year University Level degree in Business Administration or a related field
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle for business purposes

Experience

  • 3 years of closely related business experience.  Preference will be given to candidates with  one year direct experience advising entrepreneurs on matters related to starting and operating a small business.

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements for business start-ups in Ontario.  Knowledge of business principles (accounting, marketing, finance, planning) in order to advise and provide information on a broad range of business related questions.
  •  Knowledge and experience in developing and critiquing business plans.
  • Research, analytical, and organizational skills in order to gather business information and data in addition to the creation and presentation of seminars.
  • Effective verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to think and act responsibly in a political and community based business service environment.
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), and the ability to skillfully manage database information related to client data management.

 

Work Conditions

Operates in an open office environment out of multiple locations, with occasional travel to local networking meetings and trade shows to promote programs and services of the GBBEC.  Customer driven office environment requiring regular interruptions to handle walk-in traffic and telephone inquiries.   Work hours require flexibility, including evenings and rare weekends for the purposes of program and service promotion and delivery.

 

 

 

Salary & Benefits

The 2014  pay range of $48,539 to $59,259 per year ($26.67/hr to $32.56/hr).
