Do you enjoy working with diverse groups in various communities across Edmonton?  Are you in the business of building relationships and working with communities to make them a safer place to live?  The City of Edmonton's Neighbourhood and Community Development Branch requires a Community Capacity Builder (CCB) for the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (N.E.T.), a multidisciplinary team that uses community development approaches to preventing and reducing crime and fear of crime.

This is a unique and exciting position open to Registered Social Workers who are experienced in community development, have a demonstrated ability to develop creative, collaborative approaches to addressing social issues, and who are passionate about working with others to make a difference.  The position works in a close, equal partnership with a Constable from the Edmonton Police Service and Youth Liaison from the Family Centre in assigned neighbourhoods to establish a network of relationships between individuals, groups and agencies and work with them to develop and implement creative, sustainable ways to make their community a safer, happier place for all. 

As a Community Capacity Builder, you will:

  • Generate enthusiasm, commitment, and teamwork between citizens, agencies, and systems
  • Use community development principles and approaches to work in a variety of settings and with a diverse range of individuals, groups, and professionals
  • Initiate, build, and sustain effective working relationships with police partner as well as with community members, colleagues and stakeholders
  • Analyze information and situations and respond quickly and effectively to arising needs and opportunities
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to enhance the community's capacity to act on their own behalf to prevent crime and sustain improvements
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate crime prevention strategies and programs that are citizen driven and meet the needs and circumstances of the neighbourhood.  This could include implementing existing programs or developing and implementing new responses to meet specific objectives
  • Provide public education, including preparing, distributing and facilitating discussion of relevant crime statistics, demographic data and information on identified social issues in order to engage citizens in awareness and action
  • Share capacity building expertise and leadership through presentations, public meetings, and with senior administrative and elected officials
  • Assist groups with organizational development, including community engagement, developing proposals and applying for funding and board development
  • Provide appropriate referrals to individuals and groups that need assistance from human service agencies, government departments, health services, shelters, addiction treatment agencies, etc.
Requirements
  • Completion of a Bachelors degree in Social Work from an accredited university (MSW is an asset)
  • A minimum of three (3) years related professional experience with emphasis in community development
  • Registered Social Worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)
  • Demonstrated skills and creativity in the above functions, including strong skills in multidisciplinary teamwork, community and organizational development, and project management
  • Highly developed communication skills to be clear, respectful and sensitive
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations in a wide variety of settings
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and adapt to complex and changing situations
  • Ability to implement creative, proactive strategies and actions to address social issues
  • Knowledge of community resources, social issues, social programs and crime trends in Edmonton
  • Experience in engaging and animating diverse communities, including ethnocultural groups, aboriginal groups, seniors and youth
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain a satisfactory Police Information Check Certificate including a Vulnerable Sector Check from the police agency in the jurisdiction in which they reside. Residents of the City of Edmonton can usually obtain a Police Information Check Certificate including a Vulnerable Sector Check with a single visit to the Police Information Check Section located at #108, 14315 118 Avenue.  Candidates residing outside the City of Edmonton will be required to obtain a Certified Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check

Salary & Benefits

Salary:  $35.631 - $44.736 (Hourly). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.  This Union contract is currently under negotiation
