JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Civic Centre Maintenance Attendant – Winter Part Time     (Sept. – April)

 PURPOSE: On a winter seasonal basis ensure that proper operational/maintenance work is completed to acceptable levels as directed by the Maintenance – Lead Hand on all areas of facility operations (both indoor and outdoor) of the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre.

WAGE RATE:  $20.24/Hour/ Winter Part Time Status/CUPE 1188

REPORTS TO:  Civic Centre Maintenance - Lead Hand or Designate

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Civic Centre Maintenance Attendants are winter seasonal positions (Sept. – April) that report to the Civic Centre Maintenance Lead Hand through the Manager of Parks & Facilities, are responsible for ensuring the overall operational/ maintenance requirements of all components/areas and special events of The Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre.  (Indoors and Outdoors), and fully comply with but are not limited to the duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description, as well as any other duties as assigned by the Maintenance – Lead Hand or in his/her absence the Manager of Parks & Facilities or designate.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance/ operational requirements of the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre on a winter seasonal basis only.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high quality ice surface under the direction of the Maintenance Lead Hand.
  • Responsible to obtain a working knowledge of all existing systems within the building and surrounding property .i.e. electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, security, ice maintenance, and ensure uninterrupted service at all times.
  • Complete thoroughly and in a very timely manner all inspection reports; daily maintenance logs as well as all other required written reports as directed.
  • Under the direction of the Maintenance Lead Hand be responsible for maintaining a safe and clean ice surface area including glass, boards, penalty box, player’s benches, Zamboni and storage areas.
  • Responsible to check and clean dressing rooms after each ice rental.
  • Responsible to regularly check all bathrooms and clean as required.

  • Responsible to assist in providing a safe environment for all users and tenants at all times.
  • Responsible for removal and placement in the dumpster of all garbage from the building at the end of each shift.
  • Responsible to maintain a cordial working relationship with all users and tenants of the centre to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Ice surface should be edged at the end of each night shift with particular attention around Zamboni entrance, resurfaced and ready for use the next morning, unless extraordinary time constraints arise.
  • Responsible to ensure the building is empty; all doors are closed and locked and the security alarm properly set before exiting the building at the end of a work shift.
  • Carry a cordless phone at all times in order to ensure accessibility to other staff, facility users and the general public with the exception of when the Attendant is operating the zamboni.
  • Responsible to identify persons displaying unacceptable behaviour in the Centre that could result in damage to the building or its patrons. Thoroughly complete damage reports in a timely manner in order to provide pertinent information to the Maintenance Lead Hand or designate for immediate follow up.
  • Assist in the removal of snow and ice and application of sand and/or any other work required around the building in order to provide a safe and clear access to the site at all times.
  • Assist with all special events taking place at the Civic Centre during their shifts as requested by the Maintenance Lead- Hand
  • In order to avoid double bookings, refer all ice rental requests to the Parks and Facilities  office. (Except same day or walk on rentals.)
  • Same day and walk on rentals must be given a legible receipt. Money and a copy of receipt must be put in drop box or other secured area to be determined by Manager of Parks & Facilities or designate.
  • Perform other duties during ice rental times as directed by the Maintenance Lead Hand or Manager of Parks & Facilities or designate.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Lead Hand and or Manager of Parks & Facilities or designate.

SKILLS:

  • Must have good communication skills in dealing with the public on a regular basis.
  • Ability to read, write, and adequate comprehension/retention skills

TRAINING:

  • Must be trained in First Aid and CPR
  • Must be trained in WHMIS
  • Must be bondable
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 New Brunswick Driver’s license
  • Complete as requested the necessary Arena Operations Certification Courses and any other relevant courses as requested and provided.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • All work will be performed on the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre Site.
  • Must be able to work shift work.
  • Must have the ability to work and communicate well with other employees.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and deal effectively with the public on a consistent basis.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education – High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Experience: Relevant/Related experience with arena maintenance and/or training in ice making and ice maintenance. Experience with general maintenance is an asset.
  • Other Skills: Organizational, Communication and Teamwork skills are required.
  • Must be able to pass medical to determine ability to perform all labour related duties.
