Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Associate Director is a key member of the Leadership Team. Responsible for defining the corporate brand, developing and implementing the brand strategy and all external and internal communications. Provides strategic direction and oversees the implementation of new and expanded initiatives for a variety of marketing and communication programs, ensuring business strategies align to Regional and operational objectives and are financially sound. Uses a collaborative approach to ensure all aspects of Region-wide communications programs, policies and services are successfully integrated, understood and implemented in accordance with the Region’s mandate and directives. This role also provides senior advisory support to the Chair and Regional Council on strategic communications issues.

This position provides leadership and management direction to staff responsible for corporate-wide branding, marketing, internal and external communications, media/public relations, intergovernmental affairs and crisis communications. The AD also collaborates with local area municipalities regarding emergency response planning.

Requirements

Education

• University Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism or English; Master’s degree preferred.
• Executive Leadership training from a recognized institution is preferred

Knowledge and Experience

• 5 - 8 years’ progressive communications experience in a leadership role, exhibiting modern communication theories and practices in a medium to large sized organization.
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing communication strategies and leading various communications functions through the work of others; communications, marketing and branding, media relations, public relations and crisis communications.
• Proven success in inspiring staff to reach stretch goals by way of direct and indirect leadership.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and public speaking experience.
• Prior experience as the external spokesperson on behalf of the organization.
• Demonstrated experience in managing relationships with elected officials at various levels (municipal, provincial and federal) would be considered an asset.

Ability to engage people, inside and outside of the Region at executive to front-line levels working collaboratively, effectively and successfully to advance the region/Region of Niagara.

Management Skills:
Excellent delegation skills and the ability to create, mentor, and lead a strong cohesive team of engaged professionals, focused on common goals and objectives. Supportive of growth and development of staff. Brings out the best in people; guides performance towards continuous improvement. Works well independently and as part of a senior management team.
