The City of St. Albert is committed to maintaining strong intergovernmental relationships in support of City Council’s strategic priorities to ensure the City’s future success. We are recruiting for a Manager, Government Relations to support Council and senior management in ensuring the City’s intergovernmental objectives are met, our regional interests are protected and to further the City of St. Albert’s reputation as a collaborative leader.

Reporting directly to the City Manager you will be responsible to:

  • Work to maintain and enhance the City’s relationships and reputation with other governments.
  • Plan for and implement the City’s new Provincial Government Relations and Advocacy Strategy, and related future strategies and engagements.
  • Serve as an administrative conduit for other governments, advocacy associations, and other related groups.
  • Attend intergovernmental meetings and coordinate internal activities, communications, and initiatives.
  • Coordinate the activities of the St. Albert / Sturgeon County Intermunicipal Affairs Committee and related committees, task forces, and events.
  • Provide regular reports to administrative and elected officials on key initiatives.
  • Support elected officials in regional forums, such as the Capital Region Board.
  • Monitor and provide strategic advice, research, plans, and analysis related to public policy, trends, and the decisions of other governments.
  • Coordinate relations and joint efforts with municipal associations, such as the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), including support for Council in the development of resolutions.
  • Identify innovative means to advance the City’s government relations efforts in a coordinated manner.
Requirements
  • Significant knowledge and experience in government relations, supporting elected official and senior management, and advancing external relationships.
  • A proven track record of advocacy success.
  • We seek applicants with senior level experience, preferably within the public sector.
  • Completion of a post-secondary degree in the area of Political Science, Business, Public Administration or a related field. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Affiliation with the Government Relations Institute of Canada is an asset.
  • Well developed communication and presentation skills combined with exceptional interpersonal skills and strong political acumen.

Salary & Benefits

EMPLOYMENT TERM
This is a term assignment to commence in the fall of 2014. The current term is through 2016, with the intent to convert the position to permanent through the 2017 budget process

HOURS OF WORK
We offer a compressed work schedule of 72 hours bi-weekly. Monday to Friday, 8:00 – 5:00, with a regular day off [RDO] once every two weeks.

SALARY
$100,840 - $122,688 per annum. In addition the City of St. Albert offers a comprehensive benefit package.
