Reporting to a Director, you will lead all matters relating to the branch supporting the Green Building Plan and the Way We Green. This involves being responsible for representing the branch related to environmental matters, leading internal and external stakeholders consultation, and amending bylaws and policies as necessary to make the City of Edmonton more sustainable. Here are few key accountabilities of this role:
• Prepare multiple strategies for the successful implementation and achievement of broad objectives of the Way We Green and Green Building plans approved by the City Council
• Lead implementation of Green Building Plan by conducting a gap analysis on existing bylaws, developing a roadmap for integrating amendments, coordinating the preparation of bylaw amendments, policies, and consult with diverse stakeholders on impacts to land development, permits and zoning, and safety codes
• Coordinate review and approval of development permits by examining engineering drawings for development permits or land development applications
• Provide expertise on integrating sustainable development into industrial land development and for the creation of new eco-industrial standard. Apply knowledge in industrial land development practices, green technologies, and how synergy can be created between different industries
• Examine opportunities to engage external stakeholders in adopting Green Building principles and sustainable development
• Interact with the public, developers, engineers, consultants, NGOs, and provide support for the inquiries related to sustainable technologies
• Being a technical expert of Green Building construction, sustainable development, and use of green technology; provide support to Building Code exemptions, building permit reviews, zoning changes, and Area Structure Plans (ASP)
• Lead a team of staff members for success, provide guidance on projects, and ensure they apply appropriate standards, policies, and procedures when reviewing development projects from a sustainability perspective
• Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or in a related Engineering discipline from a recognized university
• Those with a technical diploma with substantial years of experience may also be considered
• A minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible land development engineering experience with focus on environmentally sustainable development
• Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA or with the engineering association of another province of Canada
• Ability to apply engineering principles to developing best practices for use of green technology and amending bylaws to reflect these principles
• Must possess the skills to lead in a multi-departmental environment and have exceptional project management skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to successfully communicate with technical and nontechnical audience
• Ability to analyze complex technical problems and make timely decisions
• Possess strong skills to mediate and negotiate for results
• Ability to engage and motivate stakeholder to be more environmentally sustainable
Hours of Work: 36.9 hours, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program
